About Us

Red Skies Magazine is an online magazine produced by Salem State University students. Under the auspices of the Professional Writing Concentration in the English Major, Red Skies publishes student work in a range of modes and genres including interviews, profiles, opinion pieces, travel essays, creative non-fiction, fiction, and poetry. Multimedia pieces – visual art, short films, and audio stories – are also welcome. Red Skies accepts submissions online here. Students interested in working on Red Skies should contact Professor Jonathan Fitzgerald, or send an email to the student editorial staff.

The magazine’s title derives from the ancient rhyme, “Red skies at night, sailors’ delight; red skies at morning, sailors take warning.” This ditty, so apropos to Salem’s maritime history, is several millennia old, and is referenced in certain English translations of the Book of Matthew.
