Will You Be My Galentine?

By: Kara Harper
For years Valentine’s Day has held the top spot for a day where couples can express their feelings for one another, quite often through chocolates, flowers and shockingly expensive restaurant reservations. While for some this day is filled with butterflies and giddy smiles, there are those for whom a day for couples comes with a feeling of bitterness at being forgotten. As having spent many years in the latter I can attest to the countless scoffing and eye-rolling I have done in the presence of overly affectionate couples. However, in recent years a new trend dubbed Galentine’s Day has given single ladies their own time to shine.
This unconventional holiday first came to fruition by way of television sitcom Parks and Recreation, where the concept was introduced by main character Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler). Since the episode’s original air date, the idea of Galentine’s Day has transcended its spot behind the screen and entered the lives of women around the country.
Celebrated on the 13th of February this unofficial holiday has gained traction for its promotion of embracing the love of friendships in lieu of relationships. Despite this holiday’s fictional origin it’s quickly growing in popularity with major retailers who are catering to the crowd by providing cards, decorations and chocolate boxes with Galentine’s Day inscriptions.
Much like it’s couple centered relative there is no right or wrong way to celebrate this friend focused holiday. Some may choose to celebrate at home surrounded by their closest friends, while others may embrace more traditional methods and treat their Galentine to an elegant restaurant dinner. No matter how you choose to celebrate with your friends, Galentine’s Day is a way to show your love and appreciation for those in your life.
