Top 10 Favorite 90's Shows SSU Misses
By: Mariah Rivera December 16, 2015
Majority of current Salem State students grew up with a deep love for 90s cartoons. They’re one of the many things that make us wish we were a child again. Everyone remembers getting up on Saturday mornings just to watch their favorite shows. Out of all of them, though, these are the ten that we miss most of all according to a poll I conducted.
10) Arthur

Following the adventures of PBS’s speculated kid named Arthur, we grew up watching him go through similar situations we might have gone through as a kid ourselves. Arthur taught us how to deal with real life troubles and inspired us to do good by our friends.
Red Skies Editor-In-Chief,Lisa Danca, commented about the show saying, “I love Arthur. I actually still watch episodes if I see the show's on when I'm channel surfing. I find the whole conflict and resolution story-telling to be therapeutic.”
9) Aaahh!! Real Monsters

This show followed three characters called Ickis, Krumm, and Oblina. We watched Nickelodeon’s monsters-in-training get into a whole bunch of adventures while learning how to scare us.
An anonymous student commented how this show was the original Monster’s Inc. “Oh and that whole Icarus' dad being famous and Icarus struggling with it, and he basically has anxiety, made him very appealing to me. A monster who could prove himself but was always too nervous to do so. He's like my spirit monster and I didn't even realize it when I was 6 how much I identify with him now.”
8) Johnny Bravo

Who could forget Johnny Bravo’s famous line, “Hey pretty, Mama?” It’s more than likely you’ve tried copying his moves, as well or danced The Monkey with him when the theme song came on.
7. Pokemon

Pokemon was the beginning for many SSU students to get into a different genre of animation called anime, which is basically animation descending from Japan. Pokemon is one the world’s largest franchises, having multiple games, TV shows, movies, and even a card game.
“…the feeling of losing myself in a world of adventure comes back each time I watch the show. Sometimes, that's all you need. A world where your Pikachu can be stolen by Team Rocket and you can get him back all in the course of twenty minutes,” said another anonymous student.
And while Ash Ketchum hasn’t aged one bit (literally) since it first came out, many fans still follow his story and hope that one day (before we all die), that he finally becomes the greatest Pokemon master. Till then, fans must continue to watch him “catch ‘em all.”
6) X-Men: Animated Series

If you’re a X-Men fan or a general lover of Marvel, you’ll be pleased to see that this show placed 6th place among SSU students. This show was the original animated series that influenced future series to come, and was the show that introduced some students to Marvel in the first place.
5) Hey Arnold!

Everyone remembers Arnold by his iconic football head. Each episode was full of adventure as we watched Arnold go around helping his friends. Some episodes even had morals to them that helped shape who we are today. Unfortunately, as great as this series was, it was cancelled, and till this day, we still wonder what happened to Arnold’s parents.
4) Powerpuff Girls

Made of sugar, spice, and everything nice as well as chemical X, the Powerpuff Girls were born, making them the most powerful kindergarten students any of us have ever laid our eyes on. Another student who has chosen to stay anonymous as well said, “this show was my life when I was a kid. My favorite character was Buttercup. I wanted to be tough like her.”
3) Dexter’s Laboratory

Before Jimmy Neutron came around, there was another kid genius by the name of Dexter who also had his own secret laboratory. We would always catch him in some situation by the help of his sister whenever she asked, “What does this button do?”
A lot of SSU students who miss this show said that they mainly picked it because of science. One student said, “It was a comedic show that made me feel good for being smart.”
2) Rugrats

Nickelodeon hosted the most daring babies on television. It was cute watching them go on adventures over trivial matters because they were young and didn’t know better. More than that, some of us were also babies, or at least toddlers, so there was a connection. It would be no surprise if this show influenced some of us to go on some adventures as well. As one anonymous student put it, “Because a baby's gotta do what a baby's gotta do.”
1) Sailor Moon

The most missed show among SSU students is Sailor Moon. Like Pokemon, it is also an anime that led a lot of students to become fans of this genre. Sailor Moon, however, originated from a manga (Japanese comic). She is the most missed iconic hero who fights evil by moonlight, wins love by daylight, and never gives up on a real fight.
One anonymous student who voted for this show said, “I learned a lot from Sailor Moon, and I genuinely enjoyed watching for how ridiculous it was.”
