Resolute Resolutions

By: Charisse Thompson
With every new year that comes, people make New Year’s resolutions. Yet some make no effort to complete their goals, while others are able to achieve them. New Year’s Resolutions are sometimes looked down upon and can be seen as trivial, but there’s nothing wrong with setting a goal for yourself to accomplish. In fact, setting a goal at the beginning of the year could give you the focus and clarity that you need to pursue said goal. Knowing what you want to happen in the New Year is just a start, you have to make changes to your everyday life in order to bring the changes that you want into your life. It’s better to go into the new year ready to achieve your objectives, rather than just aimlessly not knowing what you want to realize in the new year.
Whatever you set as a resolution, make sure it’s an achievable goal. There’s nothing better then bringing a person down than setting an unattainable goal, and then being shocked or saddened when you can’t complete it. Write down whatever goal you have in mind and acknowledge the small steps that you can take towards it.
The good thing about New Year’s resolutions is that you have all year to complete them. Just make sure to write down the goal so you don’t forget that you even set it, since you’ve got so much time to complete it. If your goal is to be healthier in the new year, then start off small and make small changes to your regular day behavior. If you eat out often, try choosing the healthier items on the menu. If you want to work out, start trying to go to the gym at least once or twice a week. Or even by just watching a workout video in your room if the gym isn’t your thing. It’s important to build up to your goal, rather than jump right into the deep end and give up.
New Year’s resolutions give people a reason to set goals, and even if they don’t fully complete them, they discover what the goals are that they wish to achieve in life. Not to mention it gives people the incentive to actually make progress towards those targets.
It’s a promise people make for the New Year, and it really can be anything. Whether it’s wanted to stop a bad habit or pick up a good habit, anything qualifies for a New Year’s resolution. The main reason to set one, and why everyone should try to make a promise to themselves, is because it’s a chance to improve ourselves. It’s a good thing to want to better yourself and it will give you something to look forward to in the new year. No one is perfect and we should never stop trying to enhance our lives. There is always room for improvement.
Not to mention, the majority of people forget their resolutions or fail to accomplish them. Why not work hard to go against this trend and not be in the majority? The year’s just begun, and it’s filled with possibilities, both good and bad.
I wish you the best of luck with making 2019 your year.
