My name is Jalen Moriarty, and I’m a senior majoring in Art & Design with a concentration in Graphic Design. I had the pleasure of working with Red Skies during the Spring 2025 semester to overhaul their brand identity which would lead to the end goal of redesigning this website. And as you can most likely tell, it happened!
One of the first challenges that I had to overcome, and I’m grateful I did, was align my style more with the team’s vision for the relaunch of the website. I typically create designs featuring bold imagery, typography, and silly pictures of animals I like (If RSM ever rebrands into a cat cafe please let me be the designer). But of course, I was still ready to take on that challenge of expanding my scope as a designer, and even more so after the first meeting with Fitz and seeing how passionate and excited he was about this project!
In order to tackle this I spent a very, very long time looking for the perfect typeface -- vyPresto Display for any other nerds who care -- having the perfect letterforms that fit my vision would make it far easier for me to help bring all the other visual elements together. After that, I knew I needed to create a visual element to make the new logo more intriguing than just the words “Red Skies Magazine”.I had begun researching editorial writing symbols, which led me to the red “delete” symbol thatI had used to replace the “e”.
However, after the identity was presented, and thankfully well received, I was asked if there was any way I could incorporate the cloud element from the previous logo as a part of the identity, which I was happy to work towards. And after many cloud sketches and logo mockups later, I was able to create a cloud shape that matched the high contrast shape of the typeface letterforms, whilst also still making it rounded and friendly!
I could not be happier to work with such an amazing group of people, whilst being able to walk away with the invaluable experience of practicing clear communication and collaboration so I can more effectively complete my design!
