Graduation Is So Bittersweet

By: Jessica Walters
As my December 2017 graduation date is quickly approaching, I am realizing this is the most bittersweet time of my life! Every exciting opportunity comes with a sad flip side. The easiest way to gather my thoughts, was by making a pro and con list, which you can enjoy below.
It’s time for a big girl job!
Pro: I can now apply for a real, career job. This means more money and more opportunity. Finally all those years of school are coming to an end and I can put my degree to use!
Con: I have to actually apply for jobs. Job searching is one of the biggest pains, and not getting the position makes you feel like crap.
I can move out of my parents’ house, yay!
Pro: With my increased salary, I will be able to move out into my own place and start making my own little home. Everyone longs for independence, and living on your own is the ultimate independence.
Con: Bills. Living with your parents is so much more affordable. They pay for and take care of generally everything, and that time is over. Independence comes with a hefty price tag!
Hello graduate school
Pro: More exciting opportunities. I will get to keep learning and enhance my skill set. This makes me eligible for better jobs and better pay, which is awesome!
Con: Being the new kid on campus again, which means getting lost, being late, not knowing where anything is located. Being new sucks!
Stepping into Adulthood
Pro: This is what we’ve been waiting for, right? All of the hard work has finally paid off, and it is time to be an adult. I have been waiting so long to reach “adulthood” and it’s finally here! I am not sure what we are all so excited for, but I guess it’s time to find out!
Con: Wait, does adulthood come with a manual? I’m not really sure how to “adult.” Is that a verb?
Time for Some New Wheels!
Pro: What’s the first thing every new college grad does? Buy a new car! A shiny new ride sounds so nice. They even have recent college grad discounts, how thoughtful of those car companies..
Con: Jokes on me... I can’t afford a new car. My car insurance is through the roof and I need to feed myself. Maybe one day.
Bye-Bye Salem
Pro: No more traveling through Salem in October, yay! In the simplest terms… I’m graduating! That’s the whole point of going to college, to graduate. After 3.5 long years, I will finally have a degree. I have never felt so proud.
Con: I’m leaving SSU. As excited as I was for this day to come, I will truly miss Salem State. Especially my friends and favorite professors. Salem has become like my second home, and I don’t think it will ever be replaced.
