An Exciting Welcome Back to Salem State’s Sociology Club
All you need to know about the return of the Sociology Club

For many years Salem State University had a Sociology Club — a place for students to discuss relevant issues on campus, connect with peers studying sociology, and debate and learn for fun without risking a bad grade (we’ve all been there). Unfortunately, the club has been inactive on campus for a few years, but now, thanks to some dedicated students, it is making a triumphant return. You may wonder what this will look like, why it matters, and how it will impact you? Well, I’d be happy to tell you.
Soc Club is returning as an SGA-sponsored student organization, meaning that it will operate like most other student organizations on campus, with an E-Board made up of four members, a Gen-Body, and open events and meetings. The club will meet bi-weekly on Fridays in the Library; their first official meeting was held on February 21st from 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm. All students are invited to attend these meetings regardless of major or minor. The Soc Club will also soon begin hosting events on campus such as game nights, movie nights, fundraisers, and more.
If you aren’t a sociology major or minor this might seem totally irrelevant to you, but Soc Club is a place for more than just sociology majors and minors. The Sociology Club hopes to provide a dedicated, safe environment on campus and hopes to bring new and diverse perspectives to Sociology. They will also be talking about and tackling societal issues on and off campus. We are all members of society — wouldn’t you rather be an informed member? You can be with the Soc Club, whether you attend just one event or every meeting.
That said, if you don’t care about student organizations, or the imminent downfall of society, Soc Club will still be a beneficial presence on campus. For example, if you’ve ever bought flowers, chocolate, rocks, jewelry, or anything else from a student org fundraiser, there will now be one more group vying for your funds. Additionally, they will be participating in at least one volunteer opportunity each semester providing students with a chance to do something for their local community. Perhaps you need help with a paper for a Sociology class or an assignment tangentially related to sociology, Soc Club is the perfect place to look for friendly advice.
Whether you’re a Sociology fanatic or just now learning that Salem State has a sociology department, the return of the Sociology Club to Salem State’s campus is a beautiful thing. They will be holding elections soon for their e-board; they are planning events as you read this; and, they are looking forward to making a difference on and off campus. The next time you’re bored on a Friday afternoon, think about swinging by Soc Club.
